A studio apartment at the rear of a plot in the town of Mahahual, Quintana Roo, Mexico

The brief was to propose the layout of a studio apartment at the rear of a narrow plot in Mahahual, Mexico. Access from the street was provided by passing an existing single storey dwelling, which is proposed to be renovated. The focus of the layout was to create a series of flowing spaces that could maximise natural ventilation and internal cooling, whilst providing the occupier with varying degrees of privacy and shading. As the proposal had to factor in the possibility of constructing a floor above, privacy from above was considered as well as the potential to locate an external staircase. The apartment is to be constructed with locally available masonry and render, and courtyards are to be planted with native species able to thrive in the local warm seaside climate.
